SUICIDE PREVENTION IS EVERYONE’S JOB.  WE ALL NEED TO PAY ATTENTION!

Be Alert to the Warning Signs of Suicide:  These Warning Signs indicate persons with a high risk for suicide requiring immediate action:

♦ Expressed and/or active threats to hurt or kill oneself or talking/writing about dying

♦ Exploring ways to kill oneself -- seeking access to pills, weapons, or other means

Other Warning Signs of increased risk of suicide that indicate a need for intervention:

♦Feelings of hopelessness

♦ Rage, anger, seeking revenge

♦ Giving away belongings

♦ Beginning or increasing use of alcohol; or drug abuse

♦ Expressions of feeling like a “burden” to others

♦ Isolation/decreased social interaction

♦ Expressing that there is no reason for living or feeling  no sense of purpose in life

RISK FACTORS: MORE RISK FACTORS = MORE DANGER OF SUICIDE

♦ Previous suicide attempts

♦ Contagion: local epidemics of suicide

♦ Unwillingness to seek help

♦ Family history of suicidal behavior

♦ Loss: relational, social, school/work, or financial

Proven Steps that Reduce the Risk of Suicide

♦ Receiving effective mental health care

♦ Receiving support for seeking help

♦ Having the ability to solve problems

♦ Feeling competent and effective

♦ Restoring positive connections to family, peers, community, and social institutions

♦ Cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide

♦ Restricting access to highly lethal means of suicide
