“We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
-St. Teresa of Calcutta
Twice a week, Catholic Charities’ staff and volunteers from St. Catherine of Siena’s Mensa Christi Ministry purchase, prepare, and distribute 500 meals for unsheltered men, women, and children living on the streets of Vallejo. Providing them with 36,000 meals a year is a great service, but even greater is the love and care given to those in our community who have been discarded and left behind.
It is easy to get lost in the sheer number of families who are homeless or in poverty or in crisis, and we can feel overwhelmed. This can lead to despair, which often leads to inaction. But our beautiful faith calls us to action and to hope.
Mother Teresa reminds us that we do not need to do big things. Each one of us can make a difference. God is glorified when those who are able give great gifts with great love, and He is glorified by those who can only give a small gift but give with great love.
